How the Light Gets In

How The Light Gets In by M.J. Hyland

Lawyer-turned-writer M.J. Hyland’s first novel is impressive. Louise is an Australian exchange-student escaping to the United States to leave behind an incompatible family and a worn self-image. True to the adverts found on the back cover, How the Light Gets In is reminiscent of The Catcher in the Rye, narrated from the perspective of an intelligent teenager who isn’t so much a misfit as she is ill-built for the prevailing social environment. The story is written in the present tense, paralleling Louise’s own lack of foresight. Highly recommended.
